Even though there are some difficulties in simply comparing the folding panels manufactured at the Chinese cultural area in the pre-Christ years with folding screen in religious arts of such as Triptych which was prevalent during Renaissance period in Europe, they have something in common in that they all have the structure of panel connected form and one story painting drawing on them. But they are different from each other in that religious paintings had the important person or events placed on the center part of the panels while the folding panel, which has the literary meaning of 'wind wall', was relatively free to have anything on it with any priority to some themes among panels. In particular, the portable folding screen can take the scene of beautiful mountain and water landscape into the house at any time. In addition, as it is a free standing style which can stand itself freely at any place, nothing can match this in unfolding and showing the spectacular landscape in the limited space. Early on, young artist such as Park Jung Young got spotlight from artistic circle when he introduced the contemporary painting on the folding screen, by throwing away the traditional stereotyped mountain and water landscape from it. As the folding screen was originated in pre-Christ ages and its contents also are different from modern things, the trial to change the characteristics of folding screen can be as big as the spectacle of folding screen itself is. Different from the folding screen art named "Untitled" which looks like "sexually horror picture" made from 1995 to 1998, "May models and my landscape" which had been released during 2002 to 2004 by Shin Hyesun was not exciting. If we look at the arts but not looking at the date when it was finished, the camera work and posture of the object in "My models and my landscape" looks not only too straightforward but also look awkward, rather making "Untitled" look more modern work. It may look like that my aggressive interpretation was not possible as the models in the picture by Shin Hyesun are her family members,

This new work made by Shin Hyesun has concentrated on the form experiment, throwing away the sex obsessed visual or all demeaning things surrounding the artist. According to the artist, the work is said to be a trial to contain the contemporary photographs on the traditional folding screen. This work is constructed with the scenery viewed from the top of Mt. Yeonmisan, Chungcheongdo Province on four panels and the calligraphy which the artist has practiced for a long period of time on four panels between the previous four panels. The picture of mountains and waters landscape, which is known to have been completed in the middle of Joseon dynasty, should be considered as the change in concepts. Deviating from the formal idea on the picture of mountains and waters landscape, it tried to bring in the actual things of photographs on the folding screen, trying to be nearer toward the truth of life. What is it like to replace the drawing of the traditional mountains and waters landscape with new photographic prints, which are the product of modern technology? The pictures on the folding screen are just 'the actual things which are just seen as they are' according to the chemical processes. The 4-panel photograph work based on the folding screen is the mixture of traditional things and contemporary things and it may produce something transcending just the mixture of the present and the past. First of all, there are no imitated mountains and waters ion on the folding screen made by Shin Hyesun. There are just the prints or photographs of the nature as it is. In addition, it does not contain the pictures of four seasons. Originally the 8-panel folding screen was called as the 'picture for four seasons and eight scenes", which means that it is the form in which the 8 facets of beauty during four seasons are drawn. This folding screen which is named as "Nature photograph folding screen" has four panels containing the printed out highways and Geumgang River and overpass bridge. It even looks like that the photographs do not have the connection between them but that they are the same pictures taken from the top of Mt. Yeonmisan at the same time. In addition, it did not bring in the beauty of nature into the folding screen. Using the traditional form of 8-panel folding screen containing the seemly awkward scenes and additionally putting his expertise in calligraphy, Shin Hyesun may try to express her feeling on current situation that all things are now suffering from the generation change at present, in terms of time, form and aesthetics.
