‘꽃이 예쁘다’라는 말은 많은 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 명제다. 노인을 모티브로 한 이번 작업의 제목은 ‘Heyday(전성기)’이며, 노인과 함께 꽃이 등장한다. 유한한 삶을 사는 인간은 지지 않는 조화를 들고 과거의 한때를 회상하거나 이상세계를 보는 듯 어딘가를 응시하며 웃고 있다. 꽃의 예쁨이나 화려함이 많은 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 정서라면 그 꽃이 언제나 활짝 피어 있게 만들어진 조화는 마치 박제된 인간의 욕망을 반영한다고 생각했다. 언제부터인가 나는 노년의 삶에 대해 상상하기 시작했다.
“Flower is beautiful” is a proposition which major people agree. The motive of this work is elderly people and subject is ‘Heyday.’ Here, elderly people and flower appear together. The man with a limited lifespan is smiling while staring at somewhere like remembering something or imagining the ideal world with infinite artificial flower on hands. This flower delivers emotional feeling of beauty and splendidness which many people can agree to. For this artificial flower which makes the flower to be blossomed and beautiful all the time reflect desire of the stuffed man. From a certain time I started to imagine my elderly life.

사고를 당하거나 병으로 일찍 세상을 뜨지 않는다면 누구나 노인이 된다. 노년기는 삶의 시기에서 끝자락이고 생물학적으로 에너지가 소멸해가는 시기이다. 그것이 현실이지만 노인들은 시들하게 삶을 마감하고 싶지 않을 것 같다. 아마도 내가 늙더라도 활기찬 생활을 영위하고 싶을 것 같다. 사람들에게 당신의 전성기가 언제였냐고 묻는다면 대부분 젊은 시절의 어떤 시기를 떠올릴 것이다. 그러나 난 이 작업 과정을 통해 현재의 행복감을 표현하고자 한다.
Unless you die from an accident or disease every person becomes aged. The life elderly people is going towards the end of one’s life as well as biological energy is being disappearing. Although this is the fact but no one actually wishes to end one’s life being languid. If I turn that age I would also wish to have an energetic life. If someone asks you when was your heyday most people would think of their time or memory in young age. However, I wish to express present happiness through this work process.

노년기는 정신적으로 유연하고 마음이 풍성한 시기라고 생각한다. 그래서 노인은 유쾌할 수 있다. 이 작업의 의미는 과정과 결과물을 통해 모델들과 즐거움을 나누는 데 있다. 이미지 안에는 꽃이 소품으로 등장한다. 노인과 꽃은 그 상징성 때문에 충돌한다. 그러나 그것이야말로 나의 흥미를 끄는 부분이었다. 나는 나의 작업에서 꽃과 노인이 조화롭게 어우러지기를 바랐다.
I personally think that elderly period is the time when you have the flexible psychology and rich mind. Hence, elderly people can be happy as well. The meaning of this work is to create happiness with model through process and performance. In the image, there is flower. This beautiful flower may visually overlap with the image of elderly people but is not fundamentally opposed to each other. In my work, flower and elderly person expressed harmoniously.

아직은 내가 젊기에 그 무서운 죽음을 향해 가는 태도는 어때야 할까라는 생각과 지금의 삶도 당신의 전성기라는 소망으로 작업을 했다. 어떤 날은 그분들이 원했던 영정 사진으로 답례를 했고, 어떤 날은 노인 일자리 구직용 명함판 사진으로 답례를 했다.
사진 이미지는 찰나의 순간이지만 현실의 삶은 늘 전성기가 되기를 희망한다. 그들은 말한다. “나의 전성기는 지금이야.”
As I am still young I think of what attitude I should have towards the death and at the same time, I worked on this with the hope that every person’s heyday is the present time. Some days, I gave portrait picture to them and for some elderly people I gave them card sized photograph for their job.
Their image in the picture is just one of the moments but I wish their present life always becomes their heyday. What they say is“my heyday is now.”
